Wells is England’s smallest city. It takes its name from the three springs in the grounds of the Bishop’s Palace.
With cobbled streets and medieval architecture it remains remarkably unspoilt and has many historic buildings including the 13th Century Cathedral, the moated Bishop’s Palace, Vicars’ Close, St Cuthbert’s Church and a good local museum.
The narrow streets and an eclectic mix of building styles all reflect on the continuing development of the city throughout the ages. Wells was rated as the Daily Telegraph’s 6th best city to visit in Britain in 2017.
Wells holds lively markets in the shadow of the Cathedral twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
